Artemis learns her OVERS

June 6th, 2008 · No Comments · Force Fetch, T work (mini & TT)

This morning before I went into work, I took Artemis out into the front yard and introduced her to OVERS (handleing).
The equipmeent I used was long line, choke collar and four white bumper.  We trained on closely mown (ok it needs cutting) grass.
We began the yard work with a reminder of the BACKS she learned [...]

Artemis and avoidance during Force Fetch - finally

May 30th, 2008 · No Comments · Force Fetch

This morning was a TSN turning point for Artemis.  We once again attempted to complete the stick fetch process but to no avail.  I think I overused the sit stick on her and she believes that it is a sit correction - thing to remember for my…next dog…
So, because of the soft mouth problems that [...]

Artemis is in the yard ane poor Tucker is on the house.

May 28th, 2008 · No Comments · Force Fetch, long line, pile work

Last night, as usual I ran out of time to get in a full training session with both dogs. So, until I secure more farmers fields for Tucker to run marks in, I felt that running Artemis in the yard was the best option.
I set out a line of 6 bumpers from 3 yard [...]

Artemis reintorduction to ducks!

May 27th, 2008 · No Comments · Force Fetch, Puppy basics

Jenni had a baseball practice and Andrew had a soccer practice last night.  Joanne took Tucker and I took Artemis to watch the respective games.  Both were pretty good for the first ‘game night’ of the season.
After the sporting events I had enough day light left to do a short session with Artemis out in [...]

End of Force Fetch and some marks today

May 19th, 2008 · No Comments · Blinds, Force Fetch, long line, walking singles

The past three days Artemis has had one training session each day in her Force Fetch.
Saturday’s session was short and SWEET.  Unlike the Friday session, she had no refusal issues at all.  She was diving at the bumpers.  Sunday was much like Saturday, I applied little pressure for her fetches.  She did have a loose [...]

Artemis FF

May 16th, 2008 · No Comments · Force Fetch

Artemis had two sessions of Force Fetch on Thursday and one on Friday.  On Friday we A) ran into a problem OR B) found a challenge to overcome.  It occurs to me that if dog training were only a matter of putting the pieces together, it would not hold the dedication of the thousands that [...]

Artemis’s Force Fetch and Tucker drills

May 14th, 2008 · No Comments · B & D Drill, Blinds, Force Fetch

Artemis’s force fetch continues.  She had one session on Monday night, two on Tuesday and two on Wednesday.  We have progressed the fetch to the ground then extended it out gradually - now about 12 feet.  I increased the pressure on the ear pinch gradually - and her speed increased in lock step.  She did [...]

FF continues and Tucker on blinds

May 12th, 2008 · No Comments · Blinds, Force Fetch, long line

Artemis has continued her Force Fetch program one session on Friday, nothing on Saturday and once on Sunday.  Today I did one session and we, over the course of the past few sessions, have progressed to the ground.  She wants to pick the bumper up by the end (this is normal) so I use my [...]

FF continues

May 8th, 2008 · No Comments · Force Fetch, ear infection

Today we two sessions of Force Fetch with Artemis, one early in the day and one late afternoon.
Morning session she began but lunging at the bumper held a couple of inches in front of her mouth J.  We moved the bumper up slightly above her head and down towards the ground getting as low as [...]

Force Fetch begins

May 7th, 2008 · No Comments · Force Fetch, de-cheating

Artemis has entered her Force Fetch portion of training.  Perhaps one of the most important, certainly one of the least understood, portions of Duck Dog training.
Prep: she knows the hold command - it has been proofed while she is walking in heel.  Her formal (enforced) obedience is good.  She is just over 7 months old [...]
